Hiring: Customer support for LibraryThing for Libraries

LibraryThing is hiring again—a relatively junior full-time position, with room to grow. We’re looking for someone smart and organized to help out with the customer support side of LibraryThing for Libraries. The basic job is providing technical support to libraries using our products, but there’s also room to be doing smaller projects as well, such as performing QA testing on new features, creating informational screencasts, writing help and FAQ pages, and more.

Duties:
  • Provide technical support to libraries using LibraryThing for Libraries and Library Anywhere (our mobile product)–help them through the installation process and answer questions
  • Conduct QA testing
  • Create how-to and marketing screencasts
  • Conduct informational webinars
  • Possibly attend trade shows
  • Learn whatever we need you to learn
  • Think creatively and suggest improvements
  • Whatever else is needed. We are still a startup so all “duties” are fluid.
You must be:
  • Organized as all get-out
  • Able to write quickly and well
  • Able to juggle multiple tasks efficiently and with humor
  • Extremely comfortable with computers
  • Able to work independently and communicate effectively with both customers and co-workers (over email, phone, and Skype)
We’d appreciate, but don’t require:
  • A Library or Information Sciences Degree
  • Experience in libraries or library “industry”
  • Customer-service or sales experience
  • Some technical skills (HTML, CSS, MySQL, etc.)
  • Mac user and lover
  • Love of cheese
Location:
Though LibraryThing is a somewhat virtual company, Boston, Massachusetts or Portland, Maine area are preferred for this position. If we get enough applications we may not look at others—no offense.
Compensation:
Salary plus gold-plated health and dental insurance. We require hard work, but we are flexible about hours.
How to apply:
Email and resume is good. Don’t send a separate cover letter. In your email, please go through the bullets above, explaining briefly how they do or don’t fit you. We will accept applications through November 7th.
Send emails to Abby: abby@librarything.com.

    Love of cheese isn’t required???

  2. Abby says:

I wanted to *add* lover of kale, but I couldn’t get the whole team to back me up on that one.

  3. Chandra says:

I read “mac and cheese lover.” nomnomnom

  4. You had me at “love of cheese.” I wish I was looking for a job!

  5. I love my current job too much to leave, but this job is such a good match to my resume …

  6. Jonathan Bohan says:

I bought a t-shirt from the “Eat More Kale” guy once, does that count?

  7. John Haggard says:

Hey, that would be way cooler than driving a truck, which is what I was forced into because of the economy. Unfortunately, I’m from Detroit, and you just don’t have anything like the Red Wings out there, so I won’t trouble you with my very diverse resume. Plus, I can’t afford to move that far. Oh well. Good luck! Great product!

  8. Tracee says:

I always told my hubby that if you said I had to eat only one thing for the rest of my life it would be cheese…too bad Wisconsin is too far away – this sounds like a great job!

  9. Kristine Van Dusen says:

The fact that I read this while sitting here at my Mac, eating cheese, sure feels like a sign…too bad California is so far away. I love LT, and cheese, in all its forms, including literary.

  10. Alison says:

Too bad I have none of the qualifications you require, since I love LT and am out of work! But then, I also live in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, so even if I was qualified, you’d probably reject me (sniffle, sniffle)….

  11. Gwendolyn says:

This position sounds great to me and it is right up my alley.

  12. You are too far away for me~~~but would love this job…;)

  13. Dr. Mike Caudle says:

If you wouldn’t mind altering the job description to just cheese and wine tasting, I am willing to move from Texas. All of our home IT equipment is Mac. I don’t have a I Love Kale tee-shirt, but am willing to buy and wear one. If I don’t get the job, I’ll still eat cheese and toast Library Thing. 🙂

  14. Jan Elkins says:

God I would love this job. Alas, I am in Utah. Oh, and I am not a Mac lover, Mac & cheese yes, Mac NO.

  15. Julie says:

Are you able to give any further information on likely salary range? Thanks!

  16. Jim says:

I’m from the country just north of you, and I’m thinking you need someone who can handle questions uniquely Canadian. Let me know, eh? I’m actually serious.

  17. E. says:

Will internships be available as in May 2012?

  18. Marisa says:

I’d like to second E’s question about internships. I’m in Boston for library school and would love to work for you all in the spring (or sooner), even if only for class credit–I love this site!

  19. Felicia says:

My room-mate just brought this to my attention today, at a whopping 6:30 in the morning! I live, ironically, in Portland, Oregon, and am willing to relocate for this position. Unfortunately, I spotted the expiration date on application acceptance, and am trying to find out if it’s still open.

I tug the MLS around wherever I go, participate in QA testing, manual and automated, and cringe when Mythbusters never follows any kind of realistic plan in their shenanigans. I’ve been a test engineer: the codes and techs I’ve touched are myriad.

My relationship with HTML and CSS so far has not been reciprocal; my blog never does what I tell it to. I plan to make the code behave with a concentrated effort.

Mac and I dance a strange dance; I could learn to love him. I’m learning about Android and am finding her somewhat interesting. If the position is still open, then of course I will embrace Mac and learn how he ticks. I already love people and am good at visualizing what might be going on in troubleshooting situations, so learning to love Mac isn’t a problem.

I’ve been a member for years. I read about your group of people, and would love to immerse myself in your kind of friendly environment. I just can’t wait to travel across the country for a low-pay position (but a very cool one), that is very hard work, where I am never, ever bored. (Boredom breeds trouble, and the urge to earn a new degree.)

Also, I really like Pepper-Jack cheese. The spicy side of life is nice.

To summarize, I would really like to talk, so please drop me a line. Thank you!

  20. Maggie says:

I would apply but I can’t do cold winters. I love the job description. Way to go for cutting out the HR lingo! 🙂
