By popular demand, I’ve added a feature for members to keep track of where they got their books. “From where?” takes two answers, either venues from LibraryThing Local, including bookstores and libraries, or “free text.”
You can find the feature:
- When editing a book
- Within your catalog (you can add the field here)
- On your library statistics page
- On venue pages
By default, members’ “From where?” data is public—unless their account itself is set to “private.” If you want to record the information but not share it, you can do so. The option is available on your account page and when you add a “From where?” location under “Privacy.”
Come talk about it here.

Fun! I especially like the “already used” list, as it’ll help avoid multiple entries for a single source (Borders/borders).
Thanks! I like it!
Thanks for this new feature – I am really excited about it! I have been putting where each book came from as a tag, but this will be a lot better. Thanks again!
Awesome, I love it! Great timing because I just started going through my collection and using one of the open fields to add in the bookstore. I’m finally moving away fully from my Excel catalog and just using LibraryThing exclusively. Now if there was just an iPhone and iPad app that talked to each other… 🙂
I was just thinking about this the other day. I have a book on my TBR shelf that I have no idea where it came from. I thought about making a spreadsheet to note where I get my books from. This new feature will be a great help.
Thanks so much!
Love it thanks! Since I’ve been using my local library more and now have a Kindle, this is a great way to keep track – and also keep track of books bought on holidays and day trips 🙂
Great, have been using the private comments section to track where I bought my books. How does one add Amazon to the venue list as I tried to add it but nasty message came up saying management and members don’t like online sites added. if that is the case then add a category called store rather than venue if it is about where one purchased a book?
Oh boy, I already have 1300 books cataloged! Not sure if I will go back and update all those. Maybe I will begin to use it for future acquisitions.
Oh, fun! I’ve been making note of where books came from in tags – this could be better, thank you.
On my Excel and Access spreadsheets I have been making notations of where my books came from. Glad to see it is added to LibraryThing.
Get my books from second hand stores and library book sales. Makes the whole project complete adding this latest feature. Thanks.
