One LibraryThing, One Book: Interpreter of Maladies

We’re back for another round of the site-wide group read, One LibraryThing, One Book (OLOB).

This month’s pick is the Pulitzer Prize-winning short story collection, Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri. We’ve wanted to try short stories for a change of pace—this is new territory for OLOB! We’ll also be dividing the book up into sections, and reading a new section every week, to help keep us all on the same page (pun intended), timing-wise.

Details

For the uninitiated, here’s how One LibraryThing, One Book works.

Preliminary discussion will begin on Wednesday, March 1st, at 12pm Eastern. Except for the dedicated thread, discussion will remain spoiler-free. From there, we’ll proceed as follows:

  • March 8th Stories 1-3
  • March 15th Stores 4-6
  • March 22nd Stories 7-9

So, by Wednesday, March 22nd, we should aim to have read the entire book. Each story will have a dedicated thread on Talk, in addition to broader question threads.

Prior to March 1st, we ask that members not create any new Talk topics for Interpreter of Maladies. On the 1st, go right ahead!

If you have any questions about One LibraryThing, One Book, or want to see what we’ve read in the past, check out our OLOB blog archive.

After Interpreter of Maladies, we’re aiming for a new OLOB pick every two to three months. For the next one, we’ll probably be voting on our next pick.

I am confused by what seem like contradictory statements in above description.

As you begin reading, feel free to post your (spoiler free!) thoughts in the “First Impressions” thread.
Except for dedicated thread, discussion will remain spoiler-free.

Does this mean that as I read a story, I can discuss it with spoilers included? In this case, it would seem unwise for me to participate until after all chapters are read for that week if I want to avoid spoilers.

Sorry for the confusion. On March 1st, I’ll be posting a new thread, clearly labeled “Interpreter of Maladies: Spoilers” where members can post any thoughts they’d like to share that are ahead of our reading schedule. The “First Impressions” thread should remain without spoilers (or at least have them hidden behind a spoiler tag), and thus, safe for you to read at any time.

Hello Loranne – I am interested in joining One LibraryThing, One Book (OLOB). I introduced myself on “Introduce Yourself” thread. Some members commented on my introduction and I would like to reply – how do I do this? What are my options?

Please feel free to reply directly in the Talk topic! Scroll down to the bottom of the Talk topic page to find the text box labeled “Add a message.” If you’re wondering how to reply directly to another post in that topic, simply start your post with “>#” replacing the # symbol with the corresponding number of the post you’d like to reply to.

So, if I wanted to reply to your original post, I’d begin my message with “>23” followed by a space. Make sure you add a space after the arrow and number sequence, and the Talk system will link directly to the post for you.

I hope this helps! Please feel free to email me if you have any further questions. I’m at loranne@librarything.com.
